Early careers

Early careers; From apprenticeships to T-Levels: discover how we’re developing young people

We want our young people to be employable. With that in mind, we’ve developed several ways for them to get that first step on the career ladder. We offer training and jobs for under-25s, apprenticeships, work experience and T-levels. Join us, and you’ll have access to a variety of career paths. On top of that, you’ll have the pride and satisfaction that comes with supporting our communities and a real opportunity to make a difference.

Work experience

At the council, we offer placements for school students, school-leavers, undergraduates, graduates, and people looking to get back into work, in a variety of service areas.

Work experience will provide you with an insight into the council and possible career options.

Applications can be made via the work placement application form

Apprenticeships

With an apprenticeship, your work counts. You get paid, hands-on experience, plus a national qualification through classroom learning – yes, you earn while you learn. To join us as an apprentice you have to be over 16, but there’s no upper age limit. As long as you’re keen, we’ll consider your application.

You can check out what apprenticeships are available here

T-Levels

Keen to kick off your career? A T-level (Technical-level) qualification could be just what you need. With this option, you can gain practical experience while studying for a T-level qualification, which is great for your CV.

Applications can be made through your local college.

"I started at Stoke-on-Trent City Council in September 2022 as a graduate. Over two years across three placements, I received consistent support and mentoring that helped me to gain experience, confidence, and insight into local government."
